Writing For Non-specialist Audiences
Writing for non-specialist audiences – why and how to do it.
How do you write a popular blog? Or a press release that catches the eye of a journalist? Why are some research articles a struggle to reach the end of, while others keep you hooked until the very last word?
Although writing for a mainstream audience can sometimes be a challenge for researchers, it’s an essential skill to hone.
What’s the secret? Of course language matters. It’s much more than that though. It’s about structuring a narrative that places the reader at the heart of the story. It’s about surprise. It’s about impact. It’s about relevance.
Occasionally it can also be about you as an individual – not just the research field in which you work.
Of course, there’s an easy way to write for a mainstream audience: simplify and dumb down your work. But that approach is banned on this 3 hour course designed for up to 30 attendees. The research you do is complex – together let’s find a way to write about that complexity in a way that is accessible, gripping and inspiring to a general audience.
Learning Objectives
After attending this workshop, you will:
- Gain the skills needed to compose: (a) an effective blog, (b) press release and (c) magazine or newspaper article
- Recognise the power of accessible conversational language
- Learn how to structure your writing in a way that is faithful to your research but rooted in the audience’s world
- Develop a personalised roadmap for your writing over the next 12 months
So what happens next?
We’ll flesh out the course overview so you have a fuller sense of how the coaching will look and feel. We can email this to you or schedule an online meeting, whichever you’d prefer. We’ll also provide costings.
If you’d like to speak to any of our current clients for an independent assessment of how we work we’ll also gladly pass on their details (with permission).
Above all, remember this is your session. We’ve been doing this for over 15 years and have a clear sense of what works and what doesn’t, so it might be that you’re happy to leave the detail to us. However if there are components you want included it’s up to us to ensure they are incorporated.
